Hello, Hideki will be in charge again this time.
In the first part, I mainly talked about "my relationship with my internship".
*"Planning an internship -Part 1-"

In the second part, I would like to talk mainly about the “Online Internship Program” held in October-November 2020 last year.

NOMURA Co., Ltd. first online internship

Until 2019, our internship program was held in a room at our Odaiba head office or Osaka office, where participating students and staff members gathered together. -19) From the perspective of measures against infectious diseases, we temporarily returned to the blank slate of the implementation plan we had been working on and turned to online. By the way, the online platform uses Microsoft's Teams.

Since it was a remote work using a PC, the staff could work from their own desks at home or at the office, but in order to proceed with the program, close communication (not physical "closeness") was necessary, The main staff gathered at the distribution venue in preparation for immediate response in case something happened. The distribution venue used a seminar room for 80 people that was originally prepared for inviting students. , Removed so that the expression can be seen) was carried out under the basic infection prevention measures.

* The large seminar room is the venue for online program distribution, and the seating arrangement of the corresponding staff ensures a sufficient distance.

“Entertainment” remains the same even online

As I mentioned in the first part, I want students to feel the Nomura mind by participating while having fun without being overwhelmed. Since I am known as a “first-class presenter” (although only for a limited time), I will try to improve the content and spirit of the lecture materials for remote presentations that reflect the times. The contents of the program were rebuilt with full of surprises and surprises). Actually, during the remote lecture, there were times when I felt like I had become an MC for an entertainment program!

I can't talk about the specifics of the program here because it's "only for the participants!" In the new hands-on program, students became employees with the aim of deepening their understanding of the four main occupations that carry out the work of NOMURA Co., Ltd., such as [sales, planning, design, and director]. We ask them to participate in a fictitious project with the intention of "experiencing the fun and excitement of Nomura's work, as well as the pain and suffering." "Even suffering" is an important point. If you only tell people how fun and interesting work is, you won't get a sense of it. In addition, in the course of interacting with young employees who are close in age to the students and veteran employees like me who have been with Nomura for a long time and can appreciate both the sour and sweet tastes, we set up “time to listen to real stories.” It is a rich program that allows you to experience NOMURA Co., Ltd. and its business from various aspects.

* The self-introduction screen starts with this mischievous photo. I ask students to call me “Hideki-san” just like my colleagues.

Issues and countermeasures due to going online

Prior to the first [online], the following concerns emerged.

1. Lack of care for participating students (assistance in work progress, troubleshooting, physical condition management, etc.)

2. Advice to students in the experience program and decrease in the number of follow-ups

3. Fatigue due to unfamiliar remote participation

Regarding these, the number of people who can participate in one session has been reduced from about 50 to half, and the number of people who can provide sufficient care has been changed. In addition, the 2-day process was rearranged into 1 day (1 day), and the number of times held was reduced from 3 to 6 to secure the same number of people as planned. As a result, the one-day program has just begun to take root in society, and I feel that it was effective in reducing the fatigue of the students who participated in remote work, which they were not used to.

In addition, as the number of sessions increased, I felt that the staff's ability to respond and their level of proficiency increased day by day. The first four days were consecutive days, so the staff had a hard time (bitter smile).

■ Recruitment staff will attend to each of the divided teams as a support role.
In addition to the advantage that one of the staff members can always keep track of the work progress and physical condition of the students, it also plays a role in promoting the work progress of the team.

■ Advisors who were previously part-timers are now full-timers.
Due to the one-day format, the work time given to the students was shortened, and for the purpose of following up, advisors including several young planners visited each team. Although there was some concern that "many boatmen will climb Mt. Funayama", according to the interviews with the students after the experience, it was well received, such as "it was reassuring" and "the advice was useful".

■In preparation for communication failures during remote work, specialist engineers will be stationed at all times to respond.
[Communication troubles] online requires the preparation of "it is natural". In fact, communication troubles occurred several times due to the compatibility of the Internet environment and PC equipment on the students' side, but thanks to this response, there were many situations where the entire progress was not interrupted. was an effective measure.

■ Identifying deficiencies by rehearsing just like the actual performance
For this day, we asked for the cooperation of employees other than the staff, and carried out pre-rehearsals almost on time. Points to note in an environment that is different from real life, such as ``I picked up the voice of the other team's support role'', ``There is a time lag between the screen and the sound'', ``The background music is loud and it is difficult to hear the voice'', The PowerPoint materials I created and points to correct in my speaking style were highlighted, and it was a good practice for getting used to my shoulders.

* 4 support roles (1 moderator) + 3 advisor roles (including me) + 1 troubleshooting technician + administrator stationed at the distribution venue

*After the program ends, all the staff gather to review the day and discuss what needs to be changed.

What are the [benefits] of online?

After finishing my first online internship program, I still found it difficult in many situations compared to previous programs where I was able to communicate face-to-face in the same space. It's a temporary emergency measure, so it can't be helped." However, half a year has passed since then, and in a situation where the work style recommended for working from home is still continuing, even in actual work, remote meetings have become difficult. Considering the current business situation where meetings and conferences are commonplace, "In a sense, this may be a real work experience." I also think so.

Although it is not possible to feel the atmosphere of a real company remotely, it is important for students to be able to participate easily from anywhere in the country (even overseas!) without the burden of travel time and transportation expenses to the company. It's an advantage.
In the past, we have struggled to deal with bad weather such as delays and suspensions of public transportation, and approaching typhoons, but we have reduced concerns about ensuring the safety of students and alleviating their concerns. .

This time, we asked the young employees who cooperated with us other than the staff to gather at the [distribution venue], but if the timing of the distribution is right, it is possible to participate from the site or home where you can not let go. We feel that the hurdles for both participants and organizers will be lowered by improving and evolving the remote work environment and compatible apps, as well as improving user familiarity and proficiency, and there is a high possibility that it will become a standard experience program. increase.

If asked, "Which one is better for you personally?", I, who thinks that more intimate communication is the most important, will immediately answer in a loud voice, "It will be held in real life!" (bitter smile)

in conclusion

In the first and second parts, I have delivered a story about [Internship] within the scope of my involvement.

As of today, I have not yet received a request from the recruiter to play the role of this year's lecturer (we are waiting!), so it is a blank slate whether or not I will be involved in this year's internship. It is a good opportunity to reconsider the company and "Nomura's work" and improve planning skills such as presentations through creating materials and passionate communication to convey interest to everyone in an easy-to-understand manner. I feel that I have had the opportunity to study in many aspects, such as being a useful experience.

Among general employees who are involved in actual work, there are quite a few who think that being involved in an internship is "troublesome volunteer work." However, especially for young employees, it is important to think that "a 'lucky chance' that leads to a valuable personal growth experience has come! I think it would be good if you could think about it. Whether you are a young employee or a veteran employee, depending on how you work, it should be a time where you can encounter fresh feelings and discoveries.

For students who read this article and became interested in NOMURA Co., Ltd. 's internship, please participate in "What is the actual program content?" I would like you to see it with your own eyes. (It seems stubborn, but I don't know if I'm here!)

In addition, I recommend that working adults who work for companies that offer internships take this opportunity to observe their own internships. For you and your company, you may come across hints that bring new awareness and growth.
Also, if you are a company that is interested in entertainment internships, if you don't mind (although internships are not my main business), I would like to talk about various things. It might be born!", so I would be happy if you could talk to me.
