Hi, I'm Hideki.
Some of the people reading this [nomlog] may be students who are interested in NOMURA Co., Ltd., Ltd. or the display industry as a place to work, or people who are looking at it as part of their job hunting. Huh?

From this time, I would like to talk about [Internship], which I have been deeply involved in from 2016 to October 2020, in two parts, the first part and the second part. Are you wondering how the planner is involved in the internship? In addition to the actual work, I would like you to know that I am working on "personal mission accomplishment".

Internship at NOMURA Co., Ltd.

Over the past five years, I have served as the main instructor for internships sponsored by NOMURA Co., Ltd., 18 times, with a total of nearly 800 students. Last year, 2020, we held an online internship program for the first time in our company's history from the perspective of measures against the new coronavirus (COVID-19) infectious disease. As this was our first attempt, we learned a lot of new things, such as challenges and benefits that differ from face-to-face real-life events, through pre-rehearsals with the cooperation of many employees and through the six-part program.

* 2020 [NOMURA Co., Ltd., Ltd. Summer Internship] aimed to interact with students through computer screens

For reference, an internship is, in a nutshell, "work experience."
It mainly refers to a period in which students actually work at a company or organization that they are interested in, or a special program sponsored by the company to help them understand the job description. The current internship at NOMURA Co., Ltd. is basically the latter.

Up to 2020, NOMURA Co., Ltd. 's internships consist of east and west internships at the Tokyo head office and Osaka office, as well as summer (seasonally autumn) and winter programs, and I am mainly in charge of the summer program at the Tokyo head office. I've been Until now, the summer has been held over two to three days, but last year's online event was a one-day program from 9:30 to 18:00.

Judging from the results of the surveys we ask our participating students after the program and posts on job hunting websites, our internships are generally highly rated. I think this is the result of the efforts of all the staff involved, especially those in charge of recruitment, and as someone who is deeply involved in the creation and progress of the program, I am very happy.

Now, let's talk about how I, a planning employee, became deeply involved in a project other than my actual work called an internship.

A program in cooperation with the Tokyo Water Science Museum

The story goes back to the early summer of 2016. The recruiter at the time asked me, "Could you cooperate with an internship for students who are interested in Nomura?" In addition to the curiosity that arose when I was allowed to participate for a short time as an advisor to the students the previous year, I made a request with a casual feeling, "If my skills will be useful in conveying the charm of Nomura." It was the beginning that I took over.

For the first year of the internship that I undertook, I had the cooperation of the Tokyo Water Science Museum, which was designed and constructed by NOMURA Co., Ltd., Ltd., and had participating students visit the actual facility. After the tour, we planned and implemented a program in which participants created a plan in a “fictitious setting,” saying, “Renovate the Water Science Museum!”

The Water Science Museum is a museum that I was in charge of planning for three years from the time I participated in the "Whole Building Renewal Competition" to the completion of the building several years ago. After explaining the outline of the facility and the concept of the exhibition in a lecture prior to the event, the students were allowed to experience the actual space and exhibition items so that they could approach planning with a sense of reality. We also aimed to have visitors NOMURA Co., Ltd. the work of Nomura Co., Ltd. by experiencing our achievements, which are filled with many elements of space creation, such as museums. Of course, I will accompany you as a guide, and I will explain the design intentions and production secrets of each exhibition item from the perspective of the person in charge involved in the design and construction. In addition to the location, which is about a 15-minute walk from NOMURA Co., Ltd. 's headquarters in Odaiba to the Ariake Water Science Museum, and the fact that NOMURA Co., Ltd., Ltd. was entrusted with the operation of the museum, we received valuable opinions on the management side. One of the reasons I chose this facility was to be able to listen to it.

* During the site visit, I gave an explanation of the exhibition to the students, including the design intention and production secrets (I am in the center).

Regarding the flow of the program after the tour of the facility, I can't say much here because I have know-how about the operation, but during the first two-day internship program, I spent a long time facing the students, "This is not a case to be taken lightly!" I realized.

Immediately after that, in preparation for the second internship that will be held a few days later, I identified the parts that I felt were lacking, corrected the PowerPoint for lectures, created additional materials, and changed the program structure. do.
In this way, from the second time onwards, I will shift my own approach to a style in which I can face the students more closely, and with the cooperation of the staff, I will upgrade the program each time. bottom. Of course, after the event, we always held a review meeting to exchange opinions with the staff, and continued to make improvements and refinements so that the students who participated would be highly satisfied with the program. By the way, the internship program at the Water Science Museum ended in 2017, the following year, from the viewpoint of effective use of travel time.

What I think is the mission of the internship

Why on earth did I continue to be involved in an internship that was not my original job for five years?

Of course, I was continuously approached by the recruiter, but the internship is not only an opportunity for the company to simply provide a place for work experience, but also for the young generation who will be responsible for the next generation. Towards, to know the world of the display industry, which is generally not well known, not only as a place of employment,
This is a great chance for NOMURA Co., Ltd. to realize the potential for the future and its value!
Because I started to think.

Students who come to NOMURA Co., Ltd. for an internship are not necessarily participating on the assumption that they will join our company. We recognize that there are many people who are interested in the display industry and participate in trials. Of course, everyone with such a motivation to participate is also very welcome. For me, through the internship experience, Our mission is to deepen the understanding of NOMURA Co., Ltd. 's work. and everyone who participated, "Nomura is funny!" From the experience that makes me feel that in the future, after going out to society "NOMURA Co., Ltd. will do something about it!" And, as one of the choices when you are in trouble, “Secret mission” to “acquire latent Nomura fans”  It is positioned as

The reason why I think about such things is that I have been working as a designer for more than 30 years since I joined NOMURA Co., Ltd., and have had various experiences and on-site experiences. It may be because I feel that I have a mission to use my presentation skills to make students feel the Nomura Mind, the spirit of NOMURA Co., Ltd..

For that reason, the lecture materials and commentary screens I create have presentation specifications that emphasize "entertainment" that is almost impossible for other companies, so you can listen to the story without getting tired of it while smiling. So, while enjoying myself, I have become a “powerpoint craftsman” and have continued to create impactful visuals and development stories every year. (Actually, I would like to show everyone the quality, but unfortunately, I'm sorry that I can't post the materials and screens here because it's a ``circumstances for adults''!)

Many of the students who participated in the internship program that I gave a lecture on later became employees of NOMURA Co., Ltd. Ltd. after applying for new graduate recruitment. I'm sure it's because they felt the 'Nomura mind' and sympathized with me." (Actually, there are several young planners who are writing this nomlog article!)

* A scene from 2019 [NOMURA Co., Ltd. Summer Internship]. I give a passionate speech to the students who came to Nomura headquarters. I pray that the day will come when I can face the students face-to-face like this time.

Well, in the second part, how was the "online internship" that I talked about at the beginning?
Also, I would like to talk about the "effects of internships" that I feel.
If you are interested, please take a look!
