Nice to meet you all. This is Inagi from Nomura.
It's a sudden, but I've been going to the gym for about 8 years.
In the world, the stomach is about to be dangerous ... I want to be muscular! I want to relieve the lack of exercise! Isn't there a lot of people who are going through the motives like this?

The reason I go is because I don't want to lose weight.

In my case, when I live a normal life, my body loses muscle and fat for some reason, and I get thinner and thinner. They say it's hard to lose weight, but for me, it's hard to gain weight.
Aside from that, I would like to think a little about the space of a gym that everyone wants to visit at least once (?) from an IE perspective.

What is IE (Industrial Engineering)?

Do you know what IE is in the first place?
IE = Internet Explorer? No, no, this time, it will be a different IE (laughs)
In the past, I was involved in site improvement activities using IE technology at a certain manufacturer.
It may be the base of my thinking now, partly because it is an era when the importance of time saving and productivity is being questioned.

Definition of IE [American Internet Engineering Association (AIIE = current IISE)]
"IE is concerned with the design, improvement, and establishment of a system that integrates people, things, and equipment. It utilizes the expertise and techniques of mathematics, physics and the social sciences, together with the principles and methods of

Ultimately, what
Use engineering approaches and scientific techniques to analyze the place (system) and aim for optimization!
It is intended to be. It is also called management engineering or industrial engineering.

Eliminate overburden, unevenness, and waste.

IE is often used on the factory floor, and focuses on eliminating all unreasonableness, unevenness, and waste that exist on the factory floor. It is a method to improve productivity by standardizing and equalizing so that the required time and quality are the same regardless of who does it. In fact, without spending money, we repeat the process of small-scale analysis → implementation → verification. Related to this is the world-famous "Toyota Production System", and I feel that the Japanese manufacturing industry is supported by IE.

Think about how you spend your time at the gym.

From here, I would like to talk with Jim. There are many people who go to the gym for various purposes, such as those who use machines to do muscle training, those who run or swim, and those who stretch.
Everyone is working hard! However, from an IE point of view, there is a lot of waste hidden in the gym.

Without further ado, let's take a look at some ways to spend your time at the gym.

watch tv

Many gyms have televisions. Although it is part of the facility service, it is a factor that disturbs the pace of exercise. CM plays at important places. Let's see a little more, don't worry about what's ahead, just a little bit more... As a result, there are times when we take a long break.

Yes, I watch a lot of TV too (laughs).

listen to music

There is often music playing in the gym. As BGM, there is no problem if it fulfills its function, but it is possible that you will listen to your favorite music.
When I was a student, I had a part-time job at a sports gym. When I did that, the staff immediately flew in and warned me, "Everyone's movement will stop, so stop!" I was trying to steal everyone's concentration, sorry everyone...

talk to friends

Many people go to the gym alone, but there are also many people who come with friends. Gyms are also often a place of community and active communication. After all, rather than exercising alone, it is more fun to be able to exercise while communicating with multiple people. It also motivates you to go. However, there are also scenes where the conversation becomes too lively, disrupting the pace of exercise and causing a decrease in concentration. Chatting with dieters and muscle training buddies is a really fun scene, but in terms of IE, waste is lurking.

fiddling with smartphone

Recently, the most common one is "fiddling with smartphones". There are quite a few people who listen to music on their smartphones in order to concentrate on their training, but when operating their smartphones, they end up checking emails that have arrived or replying to messages from friends. There are many situations where people are unintentionally forced to do unnecessary work, such as looking at irrelevant information.
Yes, of course, including me (sweat) At the gym, smartphones are monsters!

Exercise requires breaks, and each person has a different purpose, so it can't be said that it's a waste of time. However, for the purpose of increasing productivity, such a way of spending time will be regarded as wasteful work.

In IE, there is something called operation analysis. It is a method to clarify how much time people and equipment are spending on what kind of work by simply observing a set period of time.
In operation analysis, it is common to classify work into three categories and analyze them.

・Work directly linked to profit = value work
・Work that does not directly generate profit, but is necessary = incidental work
・ Work that does not lead to profit = waste work

Even in the gym, it is important to increase value work and reduce wasteful work to improve productivity.

Think of the gym as a muscle and physical strength manufacturing factory.

Here, let's think of the gym space as a "factory that manufactures muscles" and a "factory that creates physical strength."
We become products, and machines become production machines for each manufacturing process.

“Purpose”: To produce maximum productivity (value) in the shortest time
"Machine layout": Considering it as a production line, it will be arranged so that it can be completed in the shortest distance on the flow line.
"Training menu": It becomes a manufacturing recipe and decides which process (item) and how (man-hours) to do.
"Training staff": Become workers who manage the manufacturing process, increase the operating rate of machines, and assist on-site work so that more valuable products (muscles and physical strength) can be produced.

When this happens, TVs, music, and smartphones will become unnecessary, and we will be sent along a belt conveyor like an automobile production line, going through each process and completing the product (performing training). It's going to be If you think of it as a factory where products are made indifferently, is this gym really fun? However, in terms of productivity (value), when focusing on creating the maximum value in a fixed time, IE thinking is a gym and a gym for both the operator side and the user side I thought that it would be one approach to what should be and what should be in order to differentiate.

After all, it doesn't make sense if it's not something you can continue to enjoy! It's up to you how you spend your time! If you say so, there is no origin or child, but if you go anyway, you want to be committed to the result, right? (smile)
Regardless of the gym space, whether for business or private, it may be interesting to focus on the value you want to get the most and look back on how the space should be and what you do on the spot.

Please excuse me for this.
