In "Interesting Spaces", based on space reports such as the latest interesting architecture, exhibitions and events
We cut out "the current state of spatial design" from a unique perspective.
For the first installment, we will introduce "Hideyuki Nakayama Exhibition , and then" held at TOTO Gallery Ma.

A New Sense Architecture Exhibition

This exhibition presents the works of architect Hideyuki Nakayama, who is known for his delicate and gentle style. When you say "architecture exhibition", it's not common to convey "the process until architecture is completed" by displaying a lot of models and drawings, focusing on recent works, from the conception stage to completion. This exhibition has a different flavor. The concept is the time spent by the client's family on the building after the building was built in the past, which is unknown to the architect. And the novelty of conveying it with the method of "movie". It was an architectural exhibition with a new sense that had never existed before.

The entire gallery becomes a "mini-theater"

To the left of the entrance is a reception with a cute little window that looks like a movie ticket office, and the back is the lobby space. In the hallway that turns to the right, there are posters of the films to be screened. The upper floor was a movie viewing space named Theater "Cine Ma (Cinema)".

All the posters for the films (architecture works) to be screened are original movie-style designs.

Screening films and time schedules are posted by hand. One course in one hour, only a few minutes of works, so I enjoyed it even if I entered from the middle.

5 "After" and 5 Filmmakers

The screened works consist of five architectures and one new approach, each filmed by a different film director. From the script to the shooting techniques and music, the contents were well thought out according to the characteristics of each building.
For example, in "Strings and Arcs," a work that is both a house and a workplace, made up of 10 flat layers with slightly different levels, events occurring in each space are captured as the camera moves up and down using three horizontal screens. We will overlap.

“House and Road,” two houses of exactly the same shape with different materials sandwiched by a road, captured a short scene of daily life with four fixed-point cameras. It indirectly expresses the connected structure.

The video contains a very realistic scene full of life. Messy rooms, time alone, time with friends and acquaintances. You can see how the daily life of a certain family has gradually permeated into the architecture as a work that you see in architectural magazines.

Musical instruments and tunes were selected to match the image of each building, such as piano, flute, and stringed instruments.

The theater space is not allowed to shoot, so please use the leaflet.

Enchant the work with the afterglow of the video

As you immerse yourself in the afterglow of the short film, head to the third-floor lobby where architectural details are on display. From study models to rough sketches and photographs, materials that clearly convey the architectural concept are carefully selected.

And all the captions were handwritten by Mr. Nakayama himself with a pencil, and it seems that he wrote them all at once before the opening (I'm sure the people involved were nervous because they couldn't see the finished product). The atmosphere was as if Mr. Nakayama himself was speaking in a calm tone.

I was able to enjoy the atmosphere of the real site, even if I made a mistake.

A wide variety of exhibits, from the original soundtrack of the movie to the moon landing footage that inspired it.

A unique talk session, a collection of discerning works is a hot topic

The highlight of this exhibition was also in the gallery talk held every Friday night. Mr. Nakayama invited his friends, such as film directors and poets, to talk about a wide range of viewpoints, which was so popular that it was so popular that reservations were fully booked every time.

Also, at the bookshop on the 2nd floor, you can buy Hideyuki Nakayama's book, "5 films of 5 architectures, and then: 5 films of 5 architectures", which was published in conjunction with this exhibition. A discerning binding design that changes the paper according to each work. It is also worth seeing.

And there are also books recommended by the person. It is a book selection that gives a glimpse of Mr. Nakayama's thinking, which has a deep knowledge of a wide range of genres such as literature and movies.

An exhibition full of hospitality

What I felt through my experience here is the "spirit of hospitality". Mr. Nakayama's secret desire for people who are not normally interested in architecture to enjoy this exhibition as if they were visiting a "small film festival" is condensed into this "hospitality." I feel

The strength of the place created by empathy

The wide range of genres such as planning, filming, editing, and music for this movie production was realized through the network of friends of Mr. Nakayama. Against this background, people who sympathize with Mr. Nakayama's personality and the planning of this exhibition gather, and you can feel a strong impression of "a place created by everyone."

The strength of the place created by the circle of "thinking beyond the boundaries of architecture" and "empathy". In the future, I think that there will be more “creations of spaces filled with thoughts” like this.
