The online internship is also the second year this year. Even though the combination of real and online is gradually becoming established, there are still many things to explore. Many students may be accustomed to online communication, whether in class or privately. While reporting on the day of the internship, I would like to look back on the pros and cons of holding it online and the projects I worked on!

1. State of the day

The main activity of this internship was group work on creating proposals. We will divide into groups of about 5 to 6 people and create a proposal for each.
The theme of the proposal is "to create a socially good space on unused land."

*What is social good?
In order to realize a sustainable society, it is an activity that creates a happy impact by balancing “social benefit” that contributes to emerging social issues and “business benefit” as a company through creativity. We are doing various activities from July 2021.

The students were asked to work on a pre-assignment to put together their own ideas regarding the selection of unused land and new ways to utilize it, so we started by comparing each idea.

Support employees also show up at group online meetings from time to time.

Each of the students took on one of the [sales/planning/design/director] positions and shared their roles. In the planning document, not only the story and space ideas, but also the schedule and budget are submitted, so there are many things to think about in all occupations.

The proposal was completed in almost a whole day, and we gave a presentation in the afternoon of the second day. Each group will be evaluated and scored just like the competition that we actually experience every day. The judges are our planners, designers, former product directors and members of the human resources department. The perspective of the examination is different for each job type. While asking questions to the presenters, we will judge the idea of the proposal, the degree of completion, and the approach to the problem from various angles. I think that the students were also more inspired by listening to the plans of other groups.

A judge listening to a presentation. Although they appear individually online, they were actually in the same room.

The presentation is over, and the situation when judging and deciding the ranking. It's a serious face.

Finally, the ranking was announced and the two-day internship ended. Even though the groups that were ranked high and the groups that weren't, everyone praised each other's hardships at the end, there were places where they still didn't have enough to talk about the project. Everyone had a variety of thoughts, and it was the opening of the day.

Finally, everyone took a commemorative photo. A total of more than 100 people participated from the first to the third.

2. More concrete online pros and cons

In the second year of the online event, the good and bad points became more concrete.
The challenge in every aspect is, above all, the difficulty of communication.

If the event is held in real life, the support staff will be able to look around the venue, sense the atmosphere, and make appropriate calls. However, online, you can't listen to the conversation unless you enter the online meeting of the group, so you may have suddenly given advice without grasping the flow of the conversation.

Also, I think it was difficult for the students to sign when they needed help. Even so, I was able to see the positive attitude of everyone, such as asking additional questions to employees on their own initiative.

On the other hand, there is also a new aspect that has been seen by making it online. It is the tool skill of the students. We only had a zoom conference room, but we were able to see some ingenuity, such as working on multiple issues at the same time using a different calling app and using documents that could be co-edited. . Also, there was a team that used PowerPoint and illustrator, and drew CG. I think that I was able to demonstrate my skills more because I was in the same work environment as I was working on my university assignments on a regular basis.

3. Social good is difficult

The theme of this year's event is "Creating a Social Good Space on Unused Land".

Regarding "unused land", which was a pre-assignment, everyone thought very well from the point of finding the definition by themselves.

When we were preparing, we imagined something straightforward, such as the site of a closed facility, but from a completely different point of view and idea, we made a proposal that said, "Is there such a place?" Some teams were there, and we had a lot of fun.

On the other hand, I got the impression that they were struggling with the other issue, "social good." It was not included in the pre-assignment, so I think there was also the difficulty of having to think about it on the spot. In the first place, I don't have a clear answer to what social good is. Through the internship, I was made to reflect on myself and think that it is important to thoroughly investigate "what is social good and why?" and "for whom is it good?"

4. Conclusion

This time it was held fully online, but I would like all the students who participated to visit the place they planned by themselves. The convenience of access to the land, the state of the people who visit, the environment of the surrounding towns, etc. There are so many things that cannot be understood without going to the site. I would like you to observe the place carefully and feel the place firsthand, and try it yourself.

This is a brief report on what happened on the day of the 2021 internship. In the second part, the planner who was in charge of the internship has a dialogue and digs deeper into the proposal. It is scheduled to be released in late January, so please look forward to it!
