NOMURA GROUP "Fairwood Project"

NOMURA GROUP is working on the "Fairwood Project" as part of its CSV activities.
I would like to write about this activity and the various things I noticed from it from the perspective of one person in charge.
Thank you very much.

What is NOMURA GROUP “Fairwood Project”?

NOMURA GROUP "Fairwood Project"
Focusing on wood, which is one of the essential materials for space creation,
While learning how to make use of local trees,
This is a group-wide initiative that reconsiders how we interact with nature and how manufacturing should be.
Passing on rich forests and society to the future through the creation of comfortable spaces using local trees
We aim to contribute.

Its predecessor was the Environmental Solutions Committee, which started in 2010.
And I resonated with the "Green Company Declaration" of Wyeth Wyeth Co., Ltd., which was founded by Mr. Taketoshi Sato, a former employee of our company.
In the same year, the “Declaration of Support for Fairwood” was officially launched.
In addition to actively using fair wood (legal and sustainable wood),
It is a slogan that we will strive to eliminate high-risk timber.
In formulating this, we received support from Fairwood Partners (a joint project by the Global Human Environment Forum and the international environmental NGO FoE Japan).
Even before that, designs that bring out the diverse appeal of local materials,
Initiatives through practical work, such as planning that takes biodiversity conservation into consideration, were promoted on an individual basis.
Taking this declaration as an opportunity, such volunteers appeared and began to move together as one.

Thoughts on the Fairwood Project

From the forest to the city, our company is located near the downstream in the wood value chain that uses wood to make things.
And not only business entities and users, but also from Yamamoto to production and construction,
There are many opportunities to advance the project while having direct dialogue with people in each process.
Each person in charge of promoting it all over the country thinks,
What do you talk about with people you meet through work?
It may seem small, but I think it is actually very important.

We, people who live and work in the city, have few opportunities to feel nature in our daily lives.
However, the city is composed of various materials that were once "natural" gathered from various places.
And there are many people who come from their hometowns all over the country and are active here, and also in the hearts of those who are not.
The various regions that I have met in my work and private life have become my hometown.

In our daily work, when we use “trees” as clues, we can find forestry areas where trees have lived, forest owners and foresters who have been with us for generations,
A log market that raises the value of timber, a sawmill that nurtures the forest...
You will see with your own eyes what it means to make things that make use of both nature and people, and what work is all about.
The materials we have at hand, the things around us, and our own work can be seen as an extension of that.
And it's also very fun and happy that resonates with the bottom of my heart.
It's said that going to the forest makes you feel better, but that doesn't just apply to mountain climbing and leisure activities.
By meeting the production area, the current work, the life, and the days that don't change look a little different.
More discoveries and more joy.
I think that's the power of wood.
I feel that trees are like teachers who teach us how to use our creativity.

While increasing my experience with forests and trees, while learning about trees in human language from my seniors,
I would be very happy if we could learn, think and discover together.
Thank you for your continued support.
