– Thinking about drifting objects –

prologue
Zah zah wah... whoa wah... zah zah... whoa...
From far beyond the horizon, big waves and small waves crash into the shore without interruption, crawling up the loose slope of the sandy beach.
Since time immemorial, we have continued to repeat the process of bringing back and returning, returning and coming back.
The constant work of nature brings unexpected things to the beach and leaves them there.
Kunio Yanagida tells the story of Cape Irago to Toson Shimazaki, and the "palm fruit" that washed up on the beach later became a famous poem.
This is the story of such a "wreckage".
* Winter scenery with clear air, overlooking the Hakone mountains and the white top of Mt. Fuji
Beach walk through the four seasons
A variety of “floating objects” carried by such waves and tides arrive at the beach in Shonan and Chigasaki, where I live.
Almost every weekend, I go to the local beach for a beach walk. My high school and junior high school sons, who have "left their fathers", are old enough to not play with me anymore (my wife is also in tears), so I always act alone.
The purpose of the walk is, of course, to enjoy the refreshing scenery of the seaside and feel the changing seasons on your skin. It goes through.
*The debris is a mixture of cobblestones. Natural objects, man-made objects, garbage, and treasures all come together
Nagisa is just like a “market” and a “museum”
The crashing waves not only deliver various flotsam to the beach, but also cover them with sand and bury them, or bring them back to the sea, constantly changing the flotsam on the beach. It's like a market that displays a variety of products. For me, who loves walking around the market, there is no place like this. What's more, if you find something unusual or something you like, you can take it home for free, which is one of the pleasures of walking along the beach.
And it can be said that the beach where drifting debris spreads is a “museum” created by nature. It is also a place where you can learn about sea creatures and human culture from these items that have arrived on the beach. For me, who works on exhibitions at aquariums and other museums and corporate PR halls, it is also attractive that most of them are precious real objects, and the collection, regardless of genre, arouses my curiosity.
The beach, which is part of the natural environment, is similar to the seasonal exhibitions at markets and museums where you can see the "season" of each season.
When I go through many seasons, I often feel the season from the driftage. Small seashells and torn pieces of seaweed cover the beach, giving us a sense of the arrival of spring, and bonito*1 washing ashore tells us that summer is approaching. In autumn, sharks over 1m*2 and other large marine creatures can often be seen lying on the beach, which can surprise you.
*1. They come along with the arrival of skipjack tuna on ocean currents. The name is said to come from its resemblance to an eboshi hat. It is a deadly poisonous jellyfish that can be stung by its long tentacles, and is known as the "electric jellyfish."
*2. Many of the sharks that can be seen on the beach are said to grow up to 1.5m. It may be thrown away by the angler because it is caught in the angler's rod from summer to autumn.
*Encounter with marine life, bonito, auk murrelet (companion of boxfish), hump shark
Enjoy "chance encounters"
The coast of Chigasaki, where I commute, is located where a large river called the Sagami River flows into, so various gifts (gifts?) arrive not only from the ocean but also from inland areas. It offers a glimpse of not only natural objects such as driftwood and nuts, but also the traditional culture and customs of the region, such as offerings for Obon festivals and spirit horses woven from straw.
Unfortunately, daily commodities and traces related to human activities also come along with the tides and river currents. It is the so-called "drifting garbage". It is not a desirable thing because it is a troublesome flotsam that affects environmental pollution and the activities of living things, but new product launches and trends can be seen from product packages and bottles, and nostalgic designs as if they were transported by a time machine. It can also serve as a switch that reminds us of unexpected realizations and the past, such as encountering empty cans and character goods.
*Some of the drifting objects that give a glimpse of the traditional events and culture of the region, spirit horses, home size, and nostalgic heroes
With a “loose feeling”
While strolling along the beach, spread your own stories and fantasies to various "wrecked creatures". I would like to share with you the story of my chance encounter on a walk along the beach, along with the photos, in a relaxed way, in the position of nomlog 's "puff of refreshing agent".
* Please enjoy the pictures of the beach scenery and various drifting objects along with the text.
